A jet engine would be fast in either car!

overall the new car would be faster.

better suspension, better transmission, better tires.

the old car is lighter, but has a sloppy power transfer system, terrible handling and atrocious brakes.

    hemi 6.1

My friend builds 613ci maxiblock wedge engines that dyno over 1000hp and 1000 pounds of torque on a single carb. It will bolt right into a 1972 Dodge Challenger, with proper rearend setup should propel you to run in the 9’s in the quarter mile. The ‘72 is way lighter than the new Challenger so the ‘72 will be much quicker.

If you need more than a 1000hp I can get one built for you! Speed costs money, how much speed do you want.

engines are not fast or slow…,,the new 6.1 hemis are hitting 1000hp mark…[they are still being hot rodded…an old 426 or 440 bored/stroked can produce 1500 to 2000 streetable HP….

are you talking about top speed or acceleration?

Generally the top speed of a car will be limited by aerodynamic drag – I am sure the new challenger is more aerodynamic than the old

the biggest impediment to acceleration is weight, then aerodynamics – I would say the old challenger might have a slight edge here
